Capsule Review in Houston Press of “Dog Park”

September 26, 2012 By Lee

"Dog Park" G Gallery put out the open call earlier this summer for artists who use dogs as subject matter in their work. And the resulting show is indeed a winner. It has a range of mediums, from paintings to photography to sculpture, with submissions by some of the Houston art scene's heavy hitters. A real standout is Suzy Gonzalez's How Much Is That in the Window?, an oil painting depicting a normal family scene — mom, dad and little boy, who's pointing off excitedly at something out of view — except for the fact that they have dog heads instead of human. It's like a surreal Norman Rockwell painting. James Ruby's Smooch 2.0 is wonderfully all snout. Theresa Crawford's Fixated is a regal portrait of a contemplative shih tzu, while b.moodyart's The God Dog is a raw, emotive portrait of a … [Read more...]

Hurricane Isaac makes some trees fall, lops off last week of “a tree falls…”

September 6, 2012 By Lee

Alas. Hurricane Isaac closed us down. No electricity for six days means no gallery hours, no closing party. So when ”A Tree Falls...” does it make a sound? Of course, but final impact perhaps muffled by wail of winds and rain and booms of failing transformers. “What the Wind Wrought”, indeed. The wall-to-wall astroturf stayed green, and the lights came on just in time for deinstallation. Many thanks to the viewers braving torrential weekend rains to see the show! … [Read more...]

A Tree Falls… solo show at The Front

August 11, 2012 By Lee

New photographs, videos, and drawings. A thing disregarded. An unknown event. Examine minutely. Take the long view. Recollect a longing, a precognition. Relics survive the eye of the storm, the passage of time. Forensics rejects hindsight, considers the thing imagined. The world turns. The earth stood still. A deer supine in leaves, perfect in body, without mark or wound. Songbirds drop from the sky. The things they have seen and never told. Rise above. Things vanish. Washed away by the rain. Taken by the tornado. Grown small in the distance. New green grows among broken limbs and shattered trees, the hole in the sky having brought the sun. Soon, this will become the way it was. Room 4 @ The Front 4100 St Claude Ave New Orleans, LA 70117 Aug 11-Sept 2, 2012 Saturdays … [Read more...]
