Eclogue

Eclogue is a technical term for a type of pastoral poem with social, political, urban underlayers. In this case, ecological issues of wood, water, storm, flood, and animal protagonism prevail. This show includes selections from recent (2012/3) shows, each self-contained multi- part, mixed media immersive installations: A Tree Falls…at The Front, Immersive Space: FLOW at the Alexandria Museum of Art, Pulse at the Acadiana center for the Arts, as well as rarely shown ink drawings, early and middle examples from an ongoing series.

Works are reconfigured for the UNO space and new contiguities explored. The gallery is luminous, and its walls of windows invite the outdoors in.

Villanelle/Pastorale is a 50 minute video of rhythmic, recurrent motifs, pairings, and re- pairings that originally showed as a large scale projection with an artificial turf viewing platform for seating. It can be viewed for any length of time at any starting point, but its effect builds.

Plastic Gulf is a response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico (initially made in 2010 with new sequences added in 2012). In the absence of fish, fishing lures become protagonists, seek to engage your sympathies.

Pilings and plywood, suspended umbrellas rising like jellyfish or helium balloons trailing branches like root structures or dendrites.

Photographs depict the twisted and ripped detritus of trees destroyed during Hurricane Katrina. Collected by the artist in the immediate aftermath but not made into images for 7 years. They invoke flotsam, icebergs, maelstroms. Small drawings inspired loosely by pine knots are vortices and topographies. Color drawings depict the woods after tornadoes. Viewers wade through the channels between plywood on pilings.
